Air Show 2013
KMYV
Yuba County Airport, CA
The Golden West Regional Fly-in & AirShow was held in Marysville, CA on June 7, 8, & 9, 2013. During negotiations for
UNICOM Ops at Nevada County, I received a request asking that I also perform UNICOM at MYV. It was short notice, but I
gladly accepted! Camping on the field was provided, and the air show was awesome!
It was a nice building but still needed some sraightening out. Once set up, it was a pleasure to work in a familiar place, a control tower! The air conditioner worked well in the morning, but when the temperature went over 100, it struggled. When it peaked at 109, we had an extra fan running and I employed my old desert technique: a wet towel over my neck. It was bearable. And of course, working the traffic was a blast! Have I ever told you how much fun it is working air traffic?
There was a designated camping area which included a generator! We were well taken care of. It was located south of the tower, and away from the show so no one had to worry about spectators climbing on the trailers. I still had to drive to the tower, but it wasn't far. I advertised my need for another UNICOM Operator to my list of crew members, and got no response. Surprisingly, Dennis Gardner showed up! Talk about a sight for sore eyes! He made the UNICOM comfortable to work allowing breaks for both of us. It was a real pleasure to have him. And with his Burning Man experience, training was minimal.
The AIR BOSS gave the performers their daily briefing. All the pilots and their crews attended, as did the airport management, myself and the FAA Flight Standards personnel. Everything was discussed including flight boundaries, emergency procedures, timing, etc. Everyone knew what was expected of them.
The Air Boss took the airport from UNICOM, and the show started. There were three days of aerobatics. The daily shows were similar, if not the same. There were static displays, fly-bys, formations, and aerobatics! The Liberty Parachute Team started the show with Old Glory! Here's some of the highlights of the show.
