Just like last year and the temperatures were a bit lower. Once set up, it was a pleasure to work in a familiar place, a control tower! The air conditioner worked well in the morning, but when the temperature reached 100, it struggled. When it peaked, we had an extra fan running and I employed my old desert technique: a wet towel over my neck. It was bearable. And of course, working the traffic was a blast! A great reminder of the good ol' days.
There was a designated camping area which included a generator. We were well taken care of. It was located south of the tower, and away from the show so no one had to worry about spectators climbing on the trailers. I still had to drive to the tower, but it wasn't far. Mark Lambie, my supervisor from the Fresno Tower joined me this time. Besides doing an excellent job, he made the UNICOM comfortable to work allowing breaks for both of us. It was a real pleasure to have him. And with his FAA experience, training was almost non-existant. All I had to do was remind him of the status board procedure. Maybe he'll join me next time.
Due to staffing and a building key problem, I missed most of the morning briefing. But the AIR BOSS gave the performers their daily briefing. All the pilots and their crews attended, as did the airport management, and the FAA Flight Standards personnel. Everything was discussed including flight boundaries, emergency procedures, timing, etc. Everyone knew what was expected of them.
Mike Voight operates Northern California Simulator and he's located inside the Marysville Tower, 2nd floor. With this FAA Certified equipment, you can get a large portion of your flight training completed without renting an airplane. Mike allowed us to fly the simulator. This brought us back many good memories and proves that you never loose it all. It's been years since I've flown an airplane myself, but I can still do it. Mark has much more piloting experience than I have, and it shows.

We started operating UNICOM at 6:00 AM on Friday June 6th. Aircraft started showing up early, and continued all day. Starting with the med-evac REACH, then continuing with performers and observers. Also, in the camping area was a World War II weapons and item display! Including vehicles, machine guns, flags, uniforms, etc. Very interesting! Early June 7th continued with arrivals until the show started at 11:00 AM.
From early morning, more arrivals! Performers and spectators. Then the Air Boss took the airport from UNICOM, and the show started. There were static displays, fly-bys, formations, and aerobatics! The Parachutist started the show! Here's Some of the highlights of the show.
On Sunday, all aircraft, R/C aircraft, and cars were on display. Very enjoyable to wander through the history. There was a SPOT LANDING competition, and a BOMB DROP competition using bags of flour. During this time, pilots were mostly departing for home, giving us one last look at them. It was a great show. Here's Sunday's display.
